First Day of Cross-Training (Sort of…)

We moved our long run this weekend to Sunday (from Saturday) because of the extreme heat and humidity.  We were supposed to get strong storms this afternoon to cool things off a bit for tomorrow, however, the storms missed DC.  We are hoping next morning is bearable for the 8-mile training run.  Well, a shorter run for me since this will be my first one back from the calf strain.

So today was cross-training day.  It was also 110 degrees.  Mike and I went to Tysons Corner mall in Virginia.  After we got home we mapped out our walk and realized we probably walked about a mile.  Nice, low-key cross-training day… sort of  🙂  Adding in other stops including Dick’s, REI, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Trader Joe’s, and Dogfish Head Alehouse, we probably walked about a mile and a half.  It is important, I read, to walk and move my calf to keep the blood flowing to that area to speed up recovery.  Walking feels completely fine now – both calves feel the same!

A highlight for Mike was sitting in the automatic zero gravity chair at Brookstone (regretting not getting a photo of him in it):

A highlight for me was the 2-story American Girl store that included a bistro and doll hair salon.  I wish this existed when I was 10!  Sadly, only Molly (my doll) of the original three dolls is still being made (and soon will be retired).

A highlight for both of us was lunch at Cava Mezze Grille.  It’s like a Greek-style Chipotle.  We both had the bowls with chicken, rice and toppings including hummus, cucumber and tomato salad, pickled onions, cabbage, etc.  Delicious!

Overall a successful cross-training/rest day with plenty of fueling in preparation for tomorrow’s run!

Also, Mike finally downloaded Candy Crush and realized his extreme natural skill.  And I FINALLY beat level 29 after being stuck on it for 1.5 weeks!
